Director, writer, curator, cinematographer, AIDS activist. Sheridan College-trained, Toronto-based fringe filmmaker Hoolboom has been described as “major,” “protean,” “prolific,” “disturbing,” and is all of those things plus queer-friendly and PWA and much more. Conspicuous on the Toronto independent scene since 1980, whether at the Funnel or the CFMDC or TIFF (two prizes), Hoolboom was author of the indispensable interviews in Fringe Film in Canada (1997; 2001). He has also been accorded retrospectives at queer community festivals in recognition of an oeuvre that excoriates the desires and stigmas of the queer body.
