A troubled mother-son relationship is the impetus for this touching first feature about a young gay boy’s coming out. Hubert (played by Dolan) is disgusted by his mother’s low-class ways, wishing she (Anne Dorval) was more like his boyfriend Antonin’s. In order to get out of a school project, Hubert lies to his teacher saying that his mother is dead. A teen odyssey ensues in which mother and son are further alienated from one another; Hubert briefly attends a boarding school where he finds the classic intersection of lust and violence. Child-actor-come-filmmaker Dolan, who financed the entire feature from his personal savings without any institutional support, was vindicated when the film won triple awards at Cannes (Director’s Fortnight, Regards Jeunes, and the prestigious CICAE).
