Documentarist. Saskatchewan-bred, York-trained Adkin established himself at the NFB’s Toronto office with a series on media before pitching his groundbreaking 1993 documentary feature, Out: Stories of Lesbian and Gay Youth. Together with Forbidden Love, Out consolidated the inertial institution’s historic turnaround and was the only gay-male-authored entry in the 1994 and 2003 Lesbian and Gay Video packages. Adkin’s subsequent major films include the much-praised documentary Jim Loves Jack: The James Egan Story (1995), about the Canadian gay liberation pioneer, his long term relationship and his historic Supreme Court spousal benefits lawsuit. Adkins then made a concerted foray into the US market with We’re Funny That Way (1998) on standup comics, and worked for the Toronto leather circuit. Adkin’s committed relationship with his subjects and uncompromising development of full length formats is palpable in the historical and emotional impact of his work.
