Martha Newbigging

Animator, curator, children’s illustrator, activist. OCAD-trained, rural Ontario-based Newbigging was well known in the 1990s for her spots on gender and environmental politics, often made in collaboration with Almerinda Travassos. Beginning with Dresscode (2003, 3), a funny riff on the pissed-off ideograph on the ladies’s room door, Newbigging also plugged into the international queer community circuit, for which she co-curated with Travassos a hit programme of animated shorts by artists the next year.
