Synopsis

This personal video diary, shot in Super 8 and in 16mm, follows Kai Ling Xue's personal transformation, starting with self-doubt and ending with self-discovery. Through the filmmaker's exploration of her own passions, secrets and dreams, A Girl Named Kai exposes how moving images can facilitate the self-actualization process and ultimately generate discussion. Filmed both in Vancouver and in Taiwan, Xue's personal account also highlights the transnational desires and the feelings of displacement common to racialized queer subjects.
