Biography

Figure skater, painter. This book is not about figure skaters, but when Ontario-born, Quebec-trained Cranston innovated, transformed, and outed male figure skating in the 1970s he did so as a queer international television star. His defiant insistence on “being myself” allowed future generations of boys and men to transcend the uptight skating world and express androgynous styles, bodies and feelings. Cranston was the subject of the biodoc InTollerance (Sylvia Sweeney, CBC, 2001, 42), which despite a wooden narration and denial discourse from both filmmaker and the recycled painter in his Mexican refuge (“[figure skating] has nothing to do with sexual orientation... movement, feeling, emotion doesn’t have a gender...”), includes awesome period performance footage and tributes from Cranston’s successor, outed champion Brian Orser.
