Photographer, activist, filmmaker. Known chiefly as a photographer before becoming the longstanding coordinator of Montreal’s Divers/cité (Pride) celebrations in the 1990s, Girard’s one film appeared in several retrospectives. Rest-O-Rant (1987, 10) is a stylish portrait of what seems like an ordinary neighbourhood greasy spoon, animated by astutely kinetic still photographs, oscillating between saturated and washed out as the staff washes up. But look at that staff! This is a dyke work space, and Girard’s film is in fact a pulsating document of the legendary La Paryse snack bar in Montreal’s Quartier latin, a celebration of butch energy and community among the deep fryers.
