Biography

Filmmaker, writer, community activist. Montreal-born, Ryerson-trained, Toronto-based Gupta has provided four shorts to the queer and diaspora festival circuits since 1998, documentary and experimental negotiations of diasporic and lesbian-feminist identities in the context of globalization. The exceptional A Phone Comes to Jammu (1998, 7) is a handsome autobiographical black-and-white essay on the author’s link—by telephone and gender as well as by kinship—with a female contemporary in northern India, destined for an arranged marriage. Personal questions of cultural relativism and responsibility are interwoven with mysterious narrative fragments, while the artist’s present Toronto positioning, lover and all, is laid out in the here and now.
