Biography

Writer, documentarist. Prizewinning Montreal poet, essayist and novelist has had several connections to lesbian film and video. The co-director of Margaret Wescott’s pioneering “lesbian continuum” documentary Some American Feminists (1977), Brossard appeared twenty years later as a witness in Wescott’s sapphic epic Stolen Moments (1997). Brossard was also one of three subjects in Dorothy Todd Hénaut’s marathon portrait of three Quebec lesbian writers Les terribles vivantes–Louky Bersianik, Jovette Marchessault, Nicole Brossard (Firewords, 1986). Finally, Brossard collaborated with, and appeared in, Anne Barth’s respectful and imaginative video adaptation of her multi-lingual, multi-landscape poetic text La Nuit vert du Parc labyrinthe (The Green Night of Laybrinth Park, 1993). In all, Brossard performs her allusive poetic writing and champions lesbian-feminist literature.
