Film critic, journalist. Edmonton-bred, Concordia-trained journalist Hays has had an impact on the emergence of queer cinemas and cultures in Canada. Regular film critic at the Montreal Mirror beginning in 1993, Hays was also known for his in-depth interviews with filmmakers in Canadian film magazines like Take One and Cinemascope (not to mention Xtra!, The Globe and Mail and other Toronto media). In the L.A.-based Advocate, Hays also successfully pushed profiles of Fitzgerald, Rozema, Fraser and Lepage upon American readers whose international international culture is otherwise vetted by European or pop-cultural taste machines. Hays always confronts issues of sexual identity with his subjects and is known for finally having got Rozema to come out.
