Biography

Video maker. Photographer. Marik Boudreau is a socially engaged photographer working in documentary and exhibiting publicly since the 70s. In the 1980s, her photographic research on urban space took her to New York and São Paulo, two cities which influenced her practice. Upon meeting Petunia Alves, Boudreau began making videos, of which a large majority were coproduced by Alves at GIV. In Montréal Star (2004, 9) Boudreau explored the rituals of seduction in the city, juxtaposing social organization as seen in both parades and political protests. Boudreau also collaborated with the now defunct Divers/Cité Festival as official photographer, in 2005, made two promotional trailers for the festival. In these short clips, Boudreau applies her nuances socially conscious aesthetic to an explicitly queer context. She is known internationally for her artistic interest in the intersection of gender and urban space, themes which are as relevant now as they were 40 years ago.
