Saskatchewan-bred, Concordia-trained Klassen, often a collaborator of José Torrealba, provided the queer community festival circuit with Out of the Shadow Into the Sun (2001, 78), after several years of preliminary versions. In this elegant documentary history, Klassen celebrates women within the macho ranks of Spanish bullfighting. Her eroticization of her bold heroines is implicit (L-words avoided), whether in her sustained analogy to a statuesque flamenco dancer, or in her awestruck gaze, often slow motion, at the toreras’ grace and daring.
