Filmmaker. When the Canadian Film Center hired this Seneca College graduate in 2006, Julie Edelstein spent a few years as a casting assistant before moving into the production department. She directed and produced a short documentary about transgenderism, transgender rights and trans pride, Disconnect (2005, 4), and in 2009 she produced 5 Dysfunctional People in a Car (2009, 5), a film that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has screened at many festivals throughout the world. The film is a look into a car ride with five people from the same family. A humorous look at family life, the film includes the story of a young girl who, in a Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain type of narrative projection, we learn, will eventually become a lesbian, even though her current obsession is getting a hickey from the most popular boy in school.
