The Columbian-born Awad moved to Toronto in 1998 to study at the University of Toronto where she graduated with a double degree in Semiotics and Communication Theory and Drama. Shown in many festivals around the world, her video work draws mostly from personal encounters with formalist and aesthetic questions. Her Indeep Skin is a formalist lesbian road movie that explores sexuality and video as an art form through editing, sound and visual entanglement and a non-linear narrative. Much of her work examines duality, expanding and subtracting visual elements from the viewer's perspective or questioning the discrepancy between the actor and its character. Her 2007 video, Love Effect, deals with distance as a formal and affective principle, showing how the superimposed images of two naked bodies can generate a new space.
