Video maker, performance artist. A Toronto-based artist working in video and performance, Joy’s work is based on the exaggeration of normalized social behavior in order to create radical feminist interventions. Using abrasive gestures and abject imagery, her videos rearticulate gendered clichés in order to create new norms and realities. In her 2006 video, Dear God, Joy, crouched under the bathroom sink, prays to God to deliver her from her insatiable desires. In I Don’t Even Fucking Love You, the artist swings a severed heart back and forth while screaming the title of the short film, mimicking and critiquing the excessive representation of a lover scorned. As a performer, she collaborated with Brenda Goldstein for her piece Pleasure Addicts in 2009.
