Filmmaker, film critic and journalist. U. of T.- and Vancouver Film School-trained, Toronto-based McBride won a prize at the 1999 Inside Out festival for Stargaze (1998, 12), a well-wrought fiction about a Peterborough youth Derek undergoing shock aversion therapy in Toronto at the start of the 1960s to cure his homosexuality. Based on a story by Ontario writer Derek McCormack, this melancholy black and white narrative constructs an effective period context and a sympathetic, resilient character in the boy. McBride’s Alter (2001) is another short, this time with a female protagonist and a transgender, multiple personality hook.
