Biography

Director, scriptwriter, actor. Montreal-bred, Toronto-based Tierney is a queer-friendly former child actor (best known for the lead in queer British director Terence Davies’s The Neon Bible,(1996). Tierney burst onto the feature film circuit at TIFF and Venice with Twist (2003, 97), an adaptation of Oliver Twist set in the gritty Toronto world of junkie hustlers. A promising debut, especially in the acting and urban location departments, Twist did not fully work out how to update Fagin and his gang of kiddie thieves into contemporary rentboys and their pimp, whether in terms of scripting, social realism or sexual politics. All the same this tragic queer love story is a worthy addition to the robust Canadian film/video gallery of hustlers and johns, and the first dramatic feature entry since the more resonant Hustler White (Bruce LaBruce, 1995)—set after all in sunny L.A. not the filthy, freezing streets of the Queen City.
