Biography

Malaysian-born, Concordia-trained Hoe is a Montreal-based, queer-friendly filmmaker interested in the fluidities within masculinity and diasporic cultural identities. The two areas came together in his two best known works: the NFB documentary about Asian masculinity, Who is Albert Woo? (2000, 52), a lively collage of excerpts from Jackie Chan movies and interviews, including a “brown queer activist;” and the controversial feature film and queer festival perennial, Seducing Maarya (1999), a masala stew set in Montreal’s Indian restaurant underground, with a main course of familial stress, incest, rape and other potboiler spices. An interracial gay male couple is dessert, the most authentic of the various dishes.
