Biography
Video maker, interdisciplinary artist. Hong Kong-born, McMaster- and US-trained Tam was a prolific producer on the Toronto queer/art video scene before relocating to New York in the late 1990s (continuing to exhibit in Canada). His works usually merge Asian queer identity issues with high art conceptualism, often with a compelling personal overlay. Season of the Boys (1997, 4), a slow motion gaze at a Chinatown basketball match, infuses the mix with eroticism. The nostalgic documentary La Salle Primary (1998, 5) visits the artist’s old Catholic boys’ school in Hong Kong, from the empty shower rooms to the corridors bustling with uniformed little boys caught up in intimate private talk.
