Biography
Film- and videomaker. Trained at State University of New York (Buffalo) and based in Toronto, but maintaining roots in Buffalo, Mentlik has worked in experimental and personal documentary forms since 1990, producing ten short works, some broadcast on the Women’s Television Network, as well as showing at experimental, Super-8, Jewish and queer venues. Alongside her colourful and affectionate portraits of her mother, an elderly Holocaust survivor, her frequent collaborations with Anne Borden have more explicit connections to the queer constituency. For example, Rub (2002, 2), a bouncing black and white, positive and negative, closeup paean to masturbation, set under Dusty Springfield’s “Just a little lovin’,” was a queer festival favorite.
