Biography

Director. Montreal-bred, Carleton- and Ryerson-trained, Toronto-based, queer-friendly Roberts has contributed two major but under-rated and under-distributed features to the queering of Canadian cinemas. The Last Supper (1994, 96) was a compelling adaptation of an AIDS assisted-suicide stage melodrama about a dancer who choreographs from his bed his last performance for his lover and his doctor. Bubbles Galore (1996, 86) brought porn queens Annie Sprinkle and Nina Hartley together at last with the Canada Council for the Arts and sent jitters through the very foundations of public arts funding in Canada, distracting from its own considerable virtues as a pink-filtered erotic feminist lesbian hooker trash melodrama.
