Biography

Documentarist. A veteran of CBC radio and TV in the Northwest Territories and then feminist director/producer at Winnipeg’s Prairie Centre of the NFB, Bonnie Dickie is best known for Sandra’s Garden (1990), part of the government studio’s original “Gay & Lesbian Video Collection” (1994). A lyrical and emotional portrait of women gathered around abuse survivor Sandra (who has co-writer and co-director credit), the eponymous garden is a healing space full of music, flowers, water, courageous first-person voice-over and lesbian alternative families. A perennial social issue activist and collaborative filmmaker, Dickie pursued her interest in abuse recovery in her award-winning, aboriginal-themed documentary Hollow Water (2000).
