Biography
An animator with a sweet tooth, committed to hands-on frame-by-frame filmmaking, Mitchell’s dozen or so shorts since 1996 have been bittersweet miniatures that specialized in the world of relationships, girlfriends and other torments of everyday life, often imagined as metaphors of treats (“MONO GAMY SUX” spelled out in gumdrops and jellybeans in Candy Kisses, co-dir. Jane Farrow, 1999). TV Did This to Me (1999) substitutes media addiction for sugar highs. Mitchell has collaborated with LIFT and many others on the Toronto queer DIY scene, including her unrelated namesake Roy.
