Biography

Kai Ling Xue was born in Hualien, Taiwan and moved to Port Coquitlam, British Columbia in 1997 with family.  Kai’s passion in art was evident at an early age and started with drawing and painting before falling in love with black & white photography during her teen years.  While attending Emily Carr University in 2000, Xue worked in both performance to installation art. “It was during this time when still-images began to move and flow for her,” she writes. Using hand-process techniques, the first super-8 film her was created.  Xue enjoys working with various art forms and media using themes of memories, race, gender and sexuality – a guerrilla art-making style that is raw and honest.  Xue’s work has been shown at festivals and biennials in Asia, Europe, the United States, and Canada. She currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. Her short film A Girl Named Kai was featured in the programme Still Not Over It in August, 2015, co-presented by the VQFF and MEDIAQUEER.CA
