Filmmaker, multi-disciplinary artist. OCAD-trained, Toronto-based Randera had two complex, personal films circulating on the queer festival circuit at the turn of the 2000s. Jangri (1998, 7) was a personal essay confronting the uneasy mediation of lesbian identity through the heritage of South Asian culture. Erotic interludes tangle with layers of received imagery and on-the-street interviews with women in Toronto’s “Little India” who say it’s “unnatural” and “everybody hates.” A more autobiographical mosaic is Health Status Survey (2000, 12),which uses a questionnaire to tenderly but frankly narrate the shifts in power within a lesbian relationship when a disabling injury turns one partner into caregiver and the other into reluctant “patient.”
