Kent Monkman

Film maker, visual artist, theatre designer. Of part Cree ancestry from northern Manitoba, Toronto-based, Banff- and Sundance-trained Monkman first attracted attention from queer audiences with the prizewinning experimental dance video A Nation is Coming (co-dir. Michael Greyeyes, 1996, 24). This sensuous imagining of a ghost dancer’s clash with contemporary society is homoerotic without being explicitly queer. His next video Blood River (2000, 23) was more conventionally narrative, but still strikingly visual, in its portrait of an adopted young native woman reaching out from her suburban shelter for her roots and discovering the troubled, bloodied hustler who is her blood brother.
