Michael Weir

Filmmaker, editor, curator. Halifax-based Weir, trained at NSCAD and the Rhode Island School of Design, was known for several short videos of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Quiet Man (1989, 5) sets off John Wayne’s heterosexual coupling from the eponymous 1952 John Ford movie against similar swoonings by a contemporary male-male couple, to eloquently absurd effect. Weir also headed efforts to launch a Halifax queer film and video festival, which got off to a bang in 1992, but soon petered out. Weir ultimately collaborated as editor on Thom Fitzgerald’s Beefcake (1999; Genie nomination) and Wild Dogs (2002), having relocated to the US
