Biography

Filmmaker, interdisciplinary artist. Bred in the Comoro Islands, Malawi and Trinidad, Halifax-based Trépanier produced nine short videos in the last seven years of her life. Her work often pondered tension between her South Asian cultural heritage and bisexual identity, as in the colourfully effective comic narrative Sugar and Spice (1997, 10), in which lovers Radha and Anna futilely try to hide their dyke posters and dildo before the former’s aunt comes for lunch, only to discover that Durga Aunty may be much hipper than they thought (at least according to one of the alternative endings!). Trépanier received retrospective tributes in 2003 from both Image + Nation and Halifax’s “Ladyfest” feminist arts event; her other works included experimental documentaries and narratives about relationships and desire.
