Biography

Video maker, AIDS activist. Montreal-based, self-trained Dionne converged his two vocations and made in the 1990s a distinctive contribution to queer cultural politics in that city. Le Bain de M. Soleil (The Bath of Mr. Sun, 1994, 35) is a participatory excursion to a parkland cruising area that becomes a sex-radical investigation of queer sex—part porno, part ethnography, part lyrical landscape art, part political analysis of safe sex, video voyeurism, and risk. In the next year’s Comment vous dirais-je? (How would I tell you?, 32) the artist comes out to his parents as HIV+ on-camera, a bold and unsettling documentary. Active in Montreal’s Image + Nation festival, Dionne facilitated short videos by five HIV+ authors which were presented at the 1995 festival as Le Sida n’est pas une maladie honteuse... N’est-ce pas? Since then Dionne’s camera has been active in both the Montreal HIV/AIDS community and the porno network, shooting and editing 2000 bites (2000 Cocks, Paul Finaki, 2001).
