Toronto-based, York-trained Abdul is known for several short videos on the community festival circuit in the 2000s. Personal in tone and experimental in design, Written on the Body (2001, 12) and Middle of East ...and North of the Continent (2002, 9) both reflect articulately on women of colour struggling to reconcile queer identity with a heritage of political violence and cultural difference. Indiscretions (2003, 13), a colourfully stylized narrative about a thirteen-year old discovering menstruation, smarmy sex educators and other unhelpful female mentors—and finally a glimpse of lesbian possibilities—was honoured at Inside Out 2003.
