Biography

Playwright, video maker, performer, curator. Brought up on Cape Breton as Audrey, Toronto-based Butler is best known for critically acclaimed plays such as Black Friday (1990). His video work includes the Pussyboy trilogy (with Terri Robertson, 2000, 4), comprised of short animated works which depicted the trauma and isolation of growing up trans in the 1970s. Audrey’s Beard (2002, 3) is a time-lapse record of the growth of exactly that, a reflection on a former life as butch dyke. In collaboration with activist Vlad Wolanyk and others, Butler curated Inside Out’s groundbreaking trans series “Gender Euphoria” in 2003.
