Phillip Pike

Documentarist. Lawyer-turned-filmmaker Pike struck a strong chord with his first work Songs of Freedom (Toronto, 2002, 75) This gripping, low-budget video is the first documentary about queer life in Jamaica. Structured around “talking head” interviews with a network of brave men and women active in Kingston gay social and political life, Songs of Freedom ranges from a historical overview to detailed and moving personal experiences. The video is notable for its regular resort to the digitalization of all but two of its subjects’ faces to protect their anonymity, testimony to the menacing climate as well as an unsettling aesthetic device. Pike showed his groundbreaking work in festivals about “same-gender loving people of African descent” he organized in Toronto, Montreal and US cities, as well as, discreetly, in Kingston.
