A six minute animated look at a young transgender person’s love life in rural Cape Breton. First Love introduces the viewers to Alick, the outcast two-spirit hero of the Pussyboy trilogy, just as they are seduced by Kay, a beautiful Métis lesbian. If their shared outsider status serves as the backdrop of this first story, it is their queer romantic attraction draws them together for a night of unexpected sex in the woods. Animated by hand and with a very “do-it-yourself” aesthetic, First Love won the Charles Street Award for emerging video and filmmakers in 2002 at the InsideOut Festival.
