With Beyond the Helms of the Sensors , Fabo and Balser create a reflexive examination of sexuality by blending images found in public and gay archives that show men in traditional “masculine” environments and interviews with key cultural figures from fields as diverse as performance art and academia. Building “pornographic” vignettes out of these images and interviews, the filmmakers focus on different aspect of the physical reality of life. The video was created in an experimental manner, without a shooting script, recreating the exploration techniques of archival work. “Reflect(ing) on the nature, politics and aesthetic of pornography” (1) through pure explicit representation of sex and scholarly literature, this film never feels exploitative and/or pedagogic.
