Biography

Writer/poet, activist, film- and videomaker. Born in Barbados, University of Ottawa-trained, Toronto-based Bryant, “a.k.a. Tenacious,” was a self-taught, self-styled immigrant, working-class, black, queer, femme “militant mama from hell on a mission of radical societal transformation,” published in many anthologies. Her two films of the early 2000s challenged festival audiences, including No You Can’t Touch It (2001, 3), on one level a closeup documentary about the artist’s locks set in an ice-stormed Toronto, but on another level it’s an in-your-face manifesto about hair as “revolution,” overlaid by strong spoken lyrics written and performed by Bryan: “this hair marks me as a nomad, not just black, queer or female… eternal, twisting, undulating, dread, dark, dangerous and true.”
